SPEAKall!® is an evidence-based therapy app specifically designed to introduce augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in autism spectrum disorders and/or developmental speech and language disorders. SPEAKall! was originally developed by the Purdue University Program for Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) in conjunction with the Purdue AAC Research Lab and the Purdue Speech-Language Clinic. This application has been designed to help children and adults with little to no functional speech acquire an initial symbol vocabulary and learn the process of constructing sentences. Our new Preschool Core Vocabulary with PCS™ symbols enhances early language learning; and the SPEAKtogether!™ cloud-based services allow to share and synchronize content across devices.
SPEAKall! is a versatile learning platform that goes beyond simple symbol activations for voice output by actively engaging the learner in speech and language acquisition. It can be used to target a variety of communication goals including
• Functional communication
• Natural speech production
• Emerging language
• Social interaction and social-pragmatic skills
SPEAKall! can also be integrated into an exchange-based communication approach to make an easy transition from picture communication books. The interface is easily customizable to each learner’s specific needs and can grow with the learner as needs and capabilities expand.
Research and development of SPEAKall! are sponsored by the National Institutes of Health – National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). SPEAKall! has received outstanding recognition in the AAC industry as documented by prestigious awards including:
• 2017 Electronic Component News (ECN) Impact Award, Best Product Design in Medical Devices
• 2017 Milken Family Foundation Grand Prize, Milken-Penn Education Business Plan Competition
• 2017 ChanceLight Behavioral Health and Education Prize, Milken-Penn Education Business Plan Competition
